SJCC Defeats Monroeville

FREMONT – That’s one small step for Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic, one giant leap for the Crimson Streaks.

Okay, a giant leap may be a slight exaggeration, but opening the season with back-to-back wins was a nice way for the SJCC boys’ basketball season to kick off its season.

A night after squeaking out an overtime victory against Arcadia, the Crimson Streaks buckled down defensively and earned a 54-43 win over Monroeville at the Thunder Dome to open the season at 2-0.

“It’s a great start to our season,” said SJCC coach Jonathan Will.  “We just need to keep continuing to progress and our goal is to get better next week and take another step forward.”

Garrett Michael and Derek Ritzman each notched 3-point field goals in the opening quarter as SJCC took a 13-8 lead after one quarter.

Blake Michael added a 3-pointer in the second quarter and scored five of his eight points during the period as the Crimson Streaks held on to a 26-22 advantage at the intermission.

Monroeville trimmed SJCC’s lead to 38-35 after three quarters as Isaac Roeder scored seven of his 23 points in the third quarter.

However, in the fourth a combination of strong defense and three 3-pointers by Garrett Michael allowed the Crimson Streaks to come out on top.

Garrett Michael finished with a team high 21 points while Chase Harrison finished with 13 points.

“It was another tremendous defensive effort tonight,” Will said.  “We got contributions from (players) one through nine.

“We got our inside game going a little bit which allowed our shooters to get free.  Our point guards were much better getting us into our offense and we took care of the ball.  It was a tremendous team effort tonight by all nine guys.”
