The Girls Basketball team at Fremont Saint Joseph High School looks a lot different from last season, five new starters and a new coaching staff, but St Joe opened their 2018-19 season with a 61-30 victory over Cardinal Stritch in the Thunderdome.
Kimmie Burns opened the scoring for the Streaks with a layup a minute into the game, Cardinal Stritch scored a three pointer 30 seconds later, points were at a premium early in the game for both teams when St Joe head coach Eric Simon called a timeout with 4:20 remaining in the first quarter and the Streaks up 6-5. After the timeout the Streaks turned up the defensive pressure and went on a 10-0 run to finish the quarter, four points from junior guard Hanna Paeth, and a four-point play and two made free throws from Emily Militello finished the scoring for the Streaks. During that first quarter the Streaks went seven for seven from the foul line while Cardinal Stritch did not attempt a free throw.
Down 16-5 Cardinal Stritch scored the first basket of the second quarter, but turnovers and poor shooting was the story of the game for Cardinals. Junior forward Taylor VanAtta completed a three-point play in the quarter, but the team could not take advantage of being in the bonus for most of the second quarter shooting four for nine from the foul line. Militello for the Streaks scored her game high 18 points in the first half, which included five made three’s. The Streaks lead 34-13 at half time.
St. Joe continued to use pressure defense in the 3rd quarter and Cardinal Stritch continued to struggle with turnovers and missed shots. The Streaks used their entire bench to hold the Cardinals to two third quarter points. Cardinal Stritch scored as many points in the fourth quarters (15) as they had in the previous three quarter. Along with Militello, Burns added 15 points for the Streaks, VanAtta paced the Cardinals with 15. The Streaks (1-0, 0-0) play Clyde on Tuesday November 27th, the Cardinal (0-1, 0-0) play Monclova Christian on November 27th.
