CLYDE - Cool as the other side of the pillow.
That's how Clyde's Brock Newsome looked when he lined up for a 27-yard field goal attempt in the closing seconds of Friday's week one opener against Toledo Start.
Newsome booted the ball through the uprights as time expired and the Fliers walked away with a 27-24 victory.
Trailing 24-17 with 5:10 remaining, the Spartans drove 11 plays in 2:34 before Caleb Coyne hooked up with Jamarion Gaines for a 44-yard touchdown strike to tie the score with 2:36 left in the game.
Clyde took the following kickoff out to its own 25-yard line to start its final drive.
Gunner Golden picked up a key first down on a 3rd-and-2 and later added another first down run on a 3rd-and-6 to help the Fliers march down the field.
Golden led Clyde with 72 rushing yards.
A pass from Ryan Lozier to Adam Koviak earlier in the drive for a pick up of 38 yards aided Clyde's field position which set Newsome up for the game winning kick.
Clyde took a 7-0 lead early in the opening quarter as Golden punched in a two yard touchdown run
The score remained that way until 8:56 left in the second quarter when Darrell McMillan scooped up a fumble by Golden and ran it into the end zone to tie the score.
Newsome connected on a 34-yard field goal with :48 seconds left in the half, but Start's Jake Baumgartner equaled the score with a 44-yard field goal to end the first half.
The Spartans would grab a 17-10 lead with 6:37 left in the third quarter when Gaines hauled in a 56-yard touchdown pass from Coyne.
Coyne finished the game 9-of-18 for 153 yards while Gaines had two catches for 100 yards.
Clyde's Braydi Clark would score on an 11-yard run with 11:53 left in the game.
Clark finished with 66 rushing yards in the game for Clyde.
Lozier finished 6-of-14 passing for 96 yards for the Fliers.
