Rockets Hold On To Sink Sailors

OAK HARBOR - Second ranked (Division II) Oak Harbor got Vermilion's best shot on Wednesday.

The Sailors (3-9 overall) scored two runs in the top of the seventh but came up a run short as the Rockets squeezed out a 7-6 win to improve to 17-2 overall while winning their 13th straight contest.

Vermilion jumped out to a 3-0 lead in its first at bat with all three runs scoring with two outs in the inning.

It didn't take long before Oak Harbor responded with its own bats.

Ashley Riley launched her seventh home run of the season over the left field fence to make it 3-1 before the Rockets added two more runs to even the score.

Dani Epling scored on an RBI single from Seree Petersen and Kaytlynn Sandwisch scored on a sacrifice by Olivia Jensen.

Jensen would later give Oak Harbor its first lead at 4-3 when she drove home Petersen on a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the fifth Vermilion rallied to tie the score at 4-4 with two outs in the inning.

The score remained tied until the sixth when Oak Harbor added three more runs.

Abby Gregg scored on a Vermilion error and Emily Lenke came home later in the inning on another error by the Sailors' defense.

A wild pitch would bring Riley across the plate as the Rockets held a 7-4 lead going into the final inning.

In addition to her 2-for-2 (double, home run) performance at the plate, Riley also earned the win from the pitcher's circle.

Riley struck out seven batters in the game.

Epling, Petersen, Jensen and Lauren St. Clair each had hits for the Rockets.
