OAK HARBOR - The Margaretta girls' basketball team came into Saturday afternoon's Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division contest at Oak Harbor looking to keep pace with division leader Willard while putting the Rockets two games behind in the division race.
The Polar Bears took a first half lead and fought off a tough Oak Harbor team while taking a 58-48 decision over the Rockets.
With the win, Margaretta improves to 8-2 (4-1 SBC Bay) while the Rockets drop to 8-3 (2-2 SBC Bay).
The Polar Bears capitalized on a couple of early Oak Harbor miscues and grabbed a 13-8 lead after one quarter.
Jayden Moore drained a 3-pointer to kick start Margaretta's offense early in the first quarter and Kennedi Hilton and Elliana Schaefer each had buckets.
Hilton scored five more points in the second quarter on her way to a game-high 24 points.
The Rockets drew to within two points late in the second quarter on a 3-pointer by Sophia Eli, but by the end of the period the Polar Bears still held a five point advantage.
Logan Harris tallied six of her 13 points in the second and Ashley Riley added a long range 3-pointer in the quarter.
Riley finished with 11 points in the game.
The two teams both scored ten points apiece in the third.
Riley and Eli each added another 3-pointer in the third for Oak Harbor while Moore scored four of her 11 points in the quarter.
As the Rockets tried to mount a fourth quarter rally, the Polar Bears sealed the game from the charity stripe.
Oak Harbor sent Hilton to the foul line 11 times in the final quarter and Hilton responded by connecting on nine.
Hilton went 13-of-15 in the game from the line while the Polar Bears were 20-of-22 as a team.
Eli led the Rockets with 16 points.
The season continues for the Polar Bears on January 3rd when they host Western Reserve in a non-conference game.
Oak Harbor will return to work on January 5th with a home game against Port Clinton.
