Rockets Swat Blue Jackets

Ashley Riley goes to the basket for two of her 11 points for Oak Harbor

OAK HARBOR - It didn't take long Tuesday before the Oak Harbor girls' basketball team took control of the game.

Ashley Riley sunk a 3-pointer to open the game and a minute later New Riegel was forced to take a time-out as the Rockets grabbed an early lead en route to a 72-45 non-conference win.

Riley, who finished with 11 points, added a lay-up two possessions later and the Rockets led 7-0 within a flash of the opening tip.

Part of the Blue Jackets' problem was Oak Harbor's Logan Harris.

Harris swatted away several New Riegel shots and turned the ball back into the hands of her teammates who raced to the basket for several easy baskets.

New Riegel (3-5 overall) also struggled on the glass early on.  That also aided the Rockets' transition game.

When Harris wasn't being disruptive on defense, she was also lighting it up on the offensive end.

Harris connected on two 3-pointers early on and was a force in the paint, finishing with 20 points for Oak Harbor (7-1 overall).

Despite a 21-point first quarter for Oak Harbor, New Riegel was able to get a little offense behind the leadership of Brianna Gillig.

Gillig tossed in a 3-pointer and also came away with several big baskets for the Blue Jackets while leading all scorers in the game with 28.

Holding a 36-18 lead late in the second quarter, the Rockets slowed the tempo down and settled for the 18 point lead at the half.

During the second, Sophia Eli used her athleticism to create several baskets and used her long-range shooting to finish with four 3-pointers on her way to a 26-point performance.

The Rockets return to action Friday when they host Willard for a pivotal match-up in the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division as the Flashes enter at 4-2 (2-0 SBC Bay).

New Riegel is off until January 6th when it will host Seneca East.
